Who constructed the
Bayeux Tapestry?
We are reasonably
confident that the Bayeux Tapestry was commissioned by Bishop Odo, but
debate remains over who made the wall hanging. There are several
countries that lay claim to the Bayeux tapestry.
It is
known as the Bayeux Tapestry in England, it is sometimes referred to in
France as the Bayeux de la Tapisserie. France believes that
Matilda, William of Normandy's wife, wove the wall hanging. But as
Queen of England, she would never have had the time to weave the Bayeux
tapestry.
So if we
discount the construction of the Bayeux Tapestry being undertaken in
France, where was it made? Over the years, the wall hanging has been
studied by experts in this field and the consensus of opinion is that it
was of English construction. Certain historical facts of the time and
features of the Bayeux Tapestry indicate where it was made.
Reproductions of the Bayeux Tapestry are the art
heirlooms of the future. Art lovers and collectors all around the
world love the Bayeux Tapestry.
